New Post: Decorating Your Kitchen with the Pinecone Lodge Theme!
When we hear the term “lodge,” a number of images appear; the ski lodge surrounded by glistening white snow or the hunting lodge made from natural, fragrant woods. The term traditionally refers to a rustic house located in a remote mountain escape. The common theme is natural, rustic, and cozy and it’s an easy theme to achieve once you pick the right decorations. There are a number of options for creating a rustic feel for your kitchen and one of the most popular (and our favorite) is utilizing the color, shape, and symbolism of the pinecone.
Style:
Rustic, country, natural and comforting.
Colors:
Browns, creams, tans and dark greens.
Lines:
Circular and squared lines are the common shapes for pinecone lodge themes. Stick with canisters, jars, and other countertop decorations that are circular and use squared lines in your fabrics. The idea is to create a comfy, cozy feel, which is easy with checkerboard or flannel patterned curtains and towels. Simplicity is key.
Textures:
This theme gives you the chance to add some texture to your décor. Wood is a must and choosing woods with strong grains will emphasize the rustic mood you want to create. You can also add thicker textured ceramics or stoneware and beautiful wicker baskets. Don’t hold back on the textures. Remember, since your patterns will be simple, you can go heavier with the textures.
Design Elements:
Look for decorations that have simple, natural patterns of trees, pinecones and leaves. Replace your cabinet door knobs with little pinecone handles. Also, since you are working with a natural theme, you should make sure to add natural elements to your kitchen. Find a simple wicker basket or a big serving dish, fill it with pinecones from your backyard and set it on your counter as a decorative piece. For a casual look, you can keep the pinecones natural or to add a little more elegance to your kitchen, use glue and gold glitter to add some sparkle to your pinecones. Make pinecone wreathes to decorate your walls and add berries for a bit of color. Organize your countertops with stoneware (great texture) canisters, salt and pepper shakers, and utensil holders decorated with pinecone patterns for even more rustic charm.
Fabrics
Many decorators go with heavier fabrics when decorating in a country theme, but the heavier the fabric, the smaller the room looks. Sheer is too light for this theme, so we suggest adding curtains with a medium thickness. Cotton is a great fabric. Stick with a fabric that you can just barely see through. Choose flannel, gingham or checkerboard patterns. The kitchen window is a great place to add a green and cream checkerboard curtain. Fluffy cotton towels decorated with pinecones and leaves add even more color and texture to your rustic kitchen.
Tips:
• Keep your color scheme simple. Even though nature is full of different, vibrant colors, your prominent color scheme should include greens and tans to create a soothing, simple mood.
• If you are redesigning your kitchen, choose wood countertops and flooring. Wood will enhance the natural “lodge” feel.
• Since this theme contains a lot of greens, adding red can instantly give your kitchen a Christmas theme. To avoid this while still adding a spark of color, choose maroons and purples during non-holiday months.
History:
Pinecones have long been worshipped and loved as religious symbols. The pinecone comes from the Evergreen, a tree worshiped as the symbol of eternal life by Pagans. The pinecone is the fruit of the revered tree and is considered to be a powerful and ancient symbol. Pinecones can also easily be found in Roman Catholic architecture and sacred decorations.
